Preface: Waterproofing—It's About Safety and Your Wallet!

Imagine this: You're on your way to work when suddenly, a heavy downpour hits, or you encounter a large puddle on your usual route... If your electric scooter isn't waterproof, these everyday scenarios can turn into "disasters." Ignoring waterproofing can lead to serious consequences:

· Circuit Short-Circuiting: Water entering the controller or dashboard can cause malfunctions or even render the scooter unusable.

· Battery Hazards: Water seeping into the battery may cause short circuits, posing significant safety risks!

· Metal Corrosion: The frame, screws, and bearings can rust when exposed to water, accelerating wear and tear and causing annoying noises while riding.

· Performance Decline: Water in the motor can reduce power output, and bearing wear can increase riding resistance.

Therefore, choosing a truly waterproof electric scooter is crucial for ensuring riding safety, extending the scooter's lifespan, and avoiding costly repairs. Even the best waterproof designs require proper maintenance. In this guide, we'll explore:

1. What does the IPX waterproof rating mean?

2. How does HILEY achieve IPX6 waterproofing for the entire scooter and IPX7 for the dashboard?

3. How to maintain your electric scooter after riding in wet conditions!

1. Understanding IPX Waterproof Ratings

The waterproof capability of an electric scooter is indicated by its IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The first digit represents dust resistance, while the second digit (often denoted as IPX, where "X" means dust resistance is not specified) indicates waterproofing. Higher numbers mean better waterproofing:

Rating

Protection Level

Example Use Cases

IPX0

No waterproofing

Indoor use only, in completely dry conditions

IPX1/IPX2

Resists vertical/tilted water drops

Indoor use, protects against accidental spills

IPX3/IPX4

Resists light rain/splashes

Daily commuting, protects against light rain and road splashes

IPX5/IPX6

Resists water jets/strong sprays

Heavy rain riding, splashes from wheels

IPX7

Resists temporary immersion

Accidental submersion (1m depth, 30 mins)

IPX8/IPX9K

Resists prolonged immersion/high-pressure jets

Professional diving/industrial cleaning

Important Notes:

· IPX6 ≠ Submersion-proof! It protects against strong water jets (e.g., heavy rain, car wash sprays) but not prolonged immersion.

· IPX7 is for immersion, but with limits: Typically for static freshwater, up to 1m depth for 30 minutes. Dynamic or deeper water may still cause leaks.

· Waterproofing isn't permanent: Sealing materials degrade over time, especially after exposure to heat, impacts, or frequent immersion.

2. How HILEY Achieves IPX6 Full-Scooter Waterproofing and IPX7 Dashboard Protection

To ensure your HILEY electric scooter can handle harsh weather and challenging terrains, we've implemented advanced waterproofing technologies. The entire TIGER series features IPX6 waterproofing for the scooter and IPX7 for the dashboard, with even stronger protection for critical components.

Real-World Testing:

Our scooters undergo rigorous tests, including IPX6 spray tests (simulating heavy rain) and IPX7 immersion tests (1m depth, 30 mins). This ensures the scooter remains fully functional when riding through rain or shallow puddles (water level below the battery compartment).

⚠ Important Note:

While HILEY's waterproofing is robust, we do not recommend prolonged immersion or riding in deep water (above the battery compartment). This exceeds design limits and significantly increases the risk of damage.

3. Post-Ride Maintenance After Wet Conditions

Proper maintenance is essential to preserve your scooter's waterproofing and overall longevity. Follow these steps based on the riding conditions:

Scenario 1: Light Rain/Minor Splashes (Water Level < Battery Compartment)

Air Dry: Place the scooter in a cool, ventilated area for a few hours before charging or storing.

Scenario 2: Routine Maintenance After Heavy Rain (General)

  • Clean the Scooter: Rinse off mud and debris from the tires, suspension, fenders, and frame to prevent corrosion. Wipe other parts with a damp cloth and let dry.
  • Lubricate Joints: Apply WD-40 or bicycle lubricant to metal joints (e.g., folding mechanisms) to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Long-Term Storage: Store in a dry, ventilated place. Use a moisture-proof cover if the environment is humid.

Scenario 3: Heavy Rain/Short Ride Through Deep Water (Water Level ≥ Battery Compartment)

  • Step 1: Remove the battery compartment's drainage plug (if equipped) and tilt the scooter to drain water. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

  • Step 2: After drying, check for normal operation (start-up, dashboard, lights, brakes, acceleration). Stop use and contact support if any issues arise.

Scenario 4: Prolonged Immersion/Deep Water Riding (Water Level ≥ Battery Compartment)

  • Step 1: Power Off! Immediately turn off the scooter. Do not charge or restart until fully dry!
  • Step 2: Drain water as described above.
  • Deep Cleaning:

  • Battery Compartment: If DIY, carefully open the compartment and use dry towels or compressed air (cold only!) to absorb moisture. Let it dry for 12-24 hours.
  • Motor Bearings: Apply a few drops of bearing lubricant to prevent rust.
  • Thorough Inspection: Test all functions after drying. Contact support immediately for any abnormalities.

4. Additional Tips

Handling Extreme Conditions:

· Saltwater Exposure: Rinse affected areas with fresh water and dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion.

· De-Icing Salt/Chemicals: Avoid contact; rinse immediately if exposed.

· High-Pressure Water Jets: Even with IPX6 waterproofing, avoid direct sprays near seals or charging ports.

Remember: Reliable waterproofing (like HILEY's IPX6 + IPX7) and proper maintenance ensure your scooter lasts longer and performs safely in all conditions.

⚠ Emergency:

If the scooter shows burning smells, smoke, overheating, or severe malfunctions after deep immersion, move it to a safe area and contact support or emergency services immediately! Battery safety is critical!
